Mancini, Ferguson discuss cup clash

Roberto Mancini has warned his Manchester City players to beware an "angry" Manchester United when two rivals square off in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. City inflicted a humiliating 6-1 defeat on United when the the clubs met in the Premier League at Old Trafford in October - a result Sir Alex Ferguson later described as his "worst-ever day".

The Red Devils go into the forthcoming encounter at the Etihad Stadium on the back of consecutive defeats that have allowed City to open up a three-point lead at the top of the table heading into the second half of the season. While an early FA Cup exit for United could give holders City a valuable psychological edge over their fierce enemies, Mancini has warned his men to expect a ferocious response from Ferguson's team.

The Italian said: "Derbies are always difficult, and maybe this one will be even harder because United are angry after these two defeats and because we beat them at Old Trafford earlier in the season. There are a lot of issues in this game. Two defeats in a row does not happen to them very often.

"But one thing is certain: they have a strong mentality and always react positively after a defeat. Remember, after losing to us in the league they strung together seven wins and a draw. They have some injuries at the moment, but they are still a strong team with good players. That is why they are always dangerous."

Ferguson amazed by drought
United, without an FA Cup triumph since 2004, have plenty to think about. However, Ferguson maintains he will not be discussing the 6-1 loss with his players.

"I won't be mentioning that," said the Scot. "I always say that in the FA Cup I would take anyone in a home draw, and so the advantage is with City in that respect. But it's a cup tie, a local derby, and anything can happen in these games.

"It's amazing that we haven't won [since 2004). It's not a motivating force but it may be for the players that haven't got medals, particularly Rio Ferdinand. Rio mentioned that to me last year, that he doesn't have an FA Cup medal, and I couldn't believe that because of the amount of time he's been with the club."

After seeing his team lose ground in the Premier League title race with consecutive defeats by Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, Ferguson is confident of a response from United. He also feels that the English champions' experience will prove crucial in the final weeks of the campaign.

"At the moment that's obvious, because we've won the title so many times," Ferguson said. "I think from the players on the field, Tottenham are not short on experienced players and neither are City.

"That may help them and it could help them, but if questions are being asked about us at the moment, it's only because we've had two bad results. Only a couple of weeks ago everyone was talking about how our experience was going to be important in the run-in, and I think it will be."

Injury issues for both sides
United still have a lengthy injury list, with defender Chris Smalling set to return to training on Monday following tonsillitis. Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, Darren Fletcher, Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young, Michael Owen and Fabio da Silva are all on the sidelines with injury.

City have their own problems, however, with Gareth Barry suspended, Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure heading off to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, and Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri struggling for fitness.

Even though City are desperate to secure a first league title since 1968, Mancini is determined to match last season's achievement of lifting the FA Cup. The former Italy forward said: "It's the FA Cup and it's important for us. We won last year and want to get to the final if possible.

Hot-shots Gomez, Podolski set to clash

Germany strikers Mario Gomez and Lukas Podolski will go head-to-head on Friday when Cologne take on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on the final German league weekend of 2011.

Cologne striker Podolski is in impressive form with five goals in his last three league games and has netted 14 times this season, including the equaliser in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Mainz.

Bayern's Gomez is the league's top scorer with 15 goals in 15 league games, including a brace in last Sunday's 2-1 win at Stuttgart which left Bayern three points clear at the top of the table.

Both will be looking to add to their tally at Munich's Allianz Arena. Podolski, who has a contract until 2013, has been at the centre of a media frenzy since Schalke said last Saturday they are interested in signing him, with Cologne eager for him to sign an extension in the winter break.

With 95 caps to his name, former Bayern man Podolski comes with a wealth of experience and while critics have said he lacks consistency, his recent goal record speaks for itself and Bayern's Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says he is a threat.

"It's important we get a grip on him on Friday," said Neuer. "He's a quick player - with or without the ball. I know from training with the Germany team that he can do when he gets the chance with the ball on his left foot. He has got a very good shot."

Podolski's goals have kept Cologne in midtable and, according to his coach coach Stale Solbakken, he is "playing the best football of his career" with the guests out to upset Bayern's Christmas celebrations. "As we have tired to do in the past, we will try to annoy the Bavarians as we have done in recent years," said Podolski with a grin.

In-form Gomez
Cologne got under Bayern's skin in February when they enjoyed a 3-2 win over Munich at home and Podolski's team earned a goalless draw in September 2010 on their last trip to Munich. Gomez is enjoying a purple patch, but having been the victim of goal droughts in the past, is taking nothing for granted.

"If I did not score in a two week period, then I hear talk of a mini crisis," said the 25-year-old. "If I score again, then there is talk of breaking records. Right now, things are going well and I am playing in front of a very good team. Scoring goals is my job."

Bayern find out who they will face in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League next year when the draw is made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Friday. But while Manchester United-slayers Basel, Zenit St Petersburg or Olympique Marseille could lie in wait, Cologne is the main concern for now.

Bayern must wait to see if they will have France winger Franck Ribery available after he damaged a thigh muscle at Stuttgart last weekend.

Second-placed Borussia Dortmund are at bottom side Freiburg on Saturday without teenage midfielder Mario Goetze, who pulled a hamstring in last weekend's home draw with Kaiserslautern. The defending champions expect to welcome back captain Sebastian Kehl after he was kicked in the face against Marseille in last week's Champions League game.

Schalke, third in the league are at home to fifth-placed Werder Bremen in a key battle on Saturday night. The Royal Blues left both strikers Raul and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, as well as several first choice players, out of their trip to Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday in the UEFA Europa League and should be fresh against Bremen. Schalke coach Huub Stevens sat out the trip after news from Netherlands that his elderly mother had been taken ill.

The Bundesliga breaks for winter on Sunday and resumes again on Friday 20 January when Borussia Monchengladbach host Bayern.
