McClaren: I can develop Twente team

Former England manager Steve McClaren has revealed FC Twente's ambition persuaded him to relaunch his career back in the Netherlands.

The 50-year-old this week returned to the club he guided to the 2009/10 Eredivisie title three months after stepping down as Nottingham Forest manager following a frustrating spell at the City Ground.

McClaren told TalkSPORT: "I know the club very well. I know the people, I know the fans, I know the team and it's coming back into an environment which I know.

"I came back because of the ambition of the people, the ambition of the club. It was a good opportunity at Forest, but I wasn't given the tools to do the job. I was not given what I was promised, so that was unfortunate that I had to leave there.

"I was just waiting for an opportunity with ambitious people. I know the people I'm going to work with and I see a team that I can develop.

"Anybody who saw the team against Fulham [in the UEFA Europa League] will testify they are a very good team, and they are one of four teams who can win the Dutch title."

McClaren returns as Twente coach

Steve McClaren has been appointed FC Twente coach for a second time.

McClaren quickly emerged as the favourite to succeed Co Adriaanse, who was sacked on Tuesday by the Enschede club, and the appointment was confirmed this afternoon.

The former England manager led Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title in his second season before leaving to take charge of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in May 2010.

The 50-year-old was sacked less than a year later and his most recent post was at Nottingham Forest, who appointed him last June on a three-year deal.

However, McClaren resigned in October with Forest just one point and one place above the Championship relegation zone.

A statement on the club's website read: "McClaren will return to FC Twente in the position of coach/manager of technical affairs. The Enschede club and McClaren have agreed on a contract for two-and-a-half seasons. McClaren succeeds Co Adriaanse."
