Dzeko strikes as City extend lead

Edin Dzeko broke an 11-match scoring drought to send Manchester City three points clear in the English Premier League title race. The giant Bosnian netted his 14th club goal of the season as he steered David Silva's free-kick into the bottom corner for a 1-0 win.

It was enough to overcome a spirited Wigan side, although the visitors did have chances to make life a little more comfortable against the basement boys, with Dzeko taking the best chance off the toe of Sergio Aguero. And Blues boss Roberto Mancini ended the game in animated conversation with the fourth official after Martin Atkinson's failure to show Maynor Figueroa a red card for deliberate handball as he denied Aguero a clear run on goal two minutes from time.

Wigan's adherence to the passing game is very laudable, but there are times when their supporters would were prefer a bit of old-fashioned English-style long ball. Although the Latics were back-pedalling for most of the half, there were enough occasions when they did work themselves into decent positions yet failed to deliver a cross or a pass that might have put their opponents under pressure, leaving their supporters distinctly agitated.

As it turned out, James McArthur had their best chance, a snap-shot from the edge of the area, which Joe Hart gathered at the second attempt.

Silva returned to the City side for tonight's match at the DW Stadium. The diminutive Spain international is behind so much of the Blues' most inventive play and with Yaya Toure amongst the five senior figures missing this evening and Samir Nasri struggling for top form, there was more reliance on him than usual.

Silva had a couple of shots blocked, almost sent Aguero through and supplied the free-kick for Dzeko's goal. Having not found the net since 5 November, the Bosnian was in need of a goal. To that end, he could not have wished for more accommodating opponents. Wigan failed to get close enough to Dzeko and as Gary Caldwell and Antolin Alcaraz floundered, Dzeko found the bottom corner with a precise header.

Aguero brought a fine one-handed save out of Ali Al Habsi as the opening period drew to a close and, despite the closeness of the scoreline, the suspicion remained that City would cruise clear after the restart. Yet Wigan remained spirited opposition and with plenty of team-mates in support, McArthur could have picked a better option than a long-range shot from an acute angle that fizzed disappointingly wide.

It was not long before City were back on the offensive, although how they had not increased their advantage by the hour mark was a bit of a mystery. First of all, Al Habsi made a magnificent double save to deny Dzeko and Silva, clawing the Bosnian's curling effort away from the top corner, then repelling the midfielder, who had aimed low from barely seven yards.

What followed next was infuriating for Aguero, who weaved his way past three Wigan defenders and seemed to have the simplest of tasks to find the net. Instead, Dzeko whipped the ball off his toe and went for goal himself. But his shot was so weak Al Habsi was able to make a comfortable save.

It meant Roberto Martinez was able to introduce Ben Watson and Franco Di Santo midway through the second period still harbouring hopes of snatching something from the game. And how close they came too as Hugo Rodallega rolled a pass to James McCarthy on his left and the midfielder forced Hart into his best save of the match.

It was not turning into the cruise many had predicted and the jitters even seemed to get to the normally unflappable Hart, who made a save he did not need to as McCarthy's shot was flying wide. The introduction of Nigel de Jong for Nasri and Nedum Onuoha for Silva were further signs of City entering preservation mode.

Wigan continued to be the architects of their own downfall though, gifting a chance to Dzeko, which Al Habsi turned away, then costing themselves a decent attacking chance when Caldwell rolled a two-yard pass to Stam straight out of play.

And, though they worked hard to fashion another opportunity, Wigan could not find a talking point to match Figueroa's deliberate handball as he got the bounce of a De Jong clearance all wrong and, knowing he was the last man, stuck up a hand to prevent Aguero bursting clear.

Worley wins again, Phillies beat Braves to extend NL East lead

PHILADELPHIA -- Vance Worley is strengthening his case for a post-season start every time he pitches.

Worley pitched six effective innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on a rain-soaked Tuesday night to extend their lead in the NL East to 9 1-2 games.

The major league-leading Phillies won their 90th game and reduced their magic number for clinching their fifth straight NL East title to 14 games. They have won 90 games in four consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history.

Worley (11-1) allowed two runs and seven hits, striking out six to earn his ninth straight win. The Phillies have won the rookie's last 14 starts. That's the most for a rookie since Cincinnati won 14 consecutive starts by Wayne Simpson in 1970. It's also the most for any Phillies pitcher since the team won 15 straight starts by Steve Carlton in 1972.

But Worley is likely headed to the bullpen in the playoffs. Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels are the top three starters. Veteran Roy Oswalt probably will get the edge over Worley to be the No. 4 starter because of experience.

"I'd love to start, but they're going to do what they have to do," Worley said. "I've pitched out of the bullpen. Whatever they need me to do, I'd be happy to do it."

Tim Hudson (14-9) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings. He was 5-1 in his previous seven starts.

"I didn't feel particularly great but kept us in the game," Hudson said. "I've got to do a better job, make better pitches. That was a game we needed to win and should have won."

Despite losing two straight to the Phillies, the second-place Braves are cruising toward the post-season. They entered with an 8 1-2-game lead over San Francisco and St. Louis in the wild-card race.

Heavy showers forced a late start. The game began after a delay of 1 hour, 52 minutes. The teams played without interruption through steady rain once they got going. Only several thousand of the announced crowd of 44,781 were in their seats for the first pitch. It was the 206th straight sellout, including post-season play, at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies wanted to avoid a rainout because they don't have any days off the rest of the season and are already playing two doubleheaders in the next two weeks. The Braves have a doubleheader in New York on Thursday. Fans holding tickets for this game are being rewarded with free tickets to one of six selected games in 2012.

"We had to wait a while, but any time you win it makes it easier to swallow," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Raul Ibanez had three hits and three RBIs and Chase Utley hit a solo homer to lead Philadelphia's offence. Brad Lidge struck out three in the eighth and Ryan Madson finished for his 28th save in 30 chances.

Dan Uggla hit his 33rd homer for Atlanta.

After the Braves tied it at 2 in the sixth, the Phillies answered with two runs in the bottom half.

Ryan Howard walked to start the inning and Hunter Pence followed with a double. Howard scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, diving head first across the plate. Ibanez followed with an RBI double to deep centre to make it 4-2.

Uggla's RBI groundout off Michael Stutes cut it to 4-3 in the seventh. But the Phillies got two more off Cristhian Martinez in the bottom half. Howard drove in a run with a groundout and Ibanez had an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3.

Hudson retired the first two batters before running into trouble in the first. Utley drove a 2-2 pitch into Philadelphia's bullpen in right-centre for his 10th homer. Then Howard beat an overshift with a single through the vacated third-base hole. Hunter Pence followed with a single, and Ibanez looped an RBI single to shallow right-centre for a 2-0 lead.

Uggla cut it to 2-1 when he connected leading off the fourth. Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman followed Uggla's shot to right-centre with hard-hit singles. But Worley struck out Alex Gonzalez and Jose Constanza and retired Hudson on a grounder to end the threat.

The Braves tied it on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly. Uggla walked to start the inning and Jones doubled. After Freeman walked, Gonzalez hit a fly to left to score Uggla.

NOTES: Luis Salazar returned to the Braves' dugout nearly six months after losing his left eye when he was struck by a line drive in spring training. Salazar, who coached with Atlanta's high Class-A Lynchburg Hillcats this summer, is spending a week as an extra coach on manager Fredi Gonzalez's staff. ... Chuck LaMar, the Phillies assistant general manager of player development and scouting, resigned abruptly following a meeting with GM Ruben Amaro Jr. LaMar joined the team in Oct. 2007. Amaro called LaMar's resignation a "disappointment." ... Lee was named the NL Pitcher of the Month for August, one day after he tossed his sixth shutout of the season. Lee was 5-0 with an 0.45 ERA. He also won the award in June when he was 0-5 with a microscopic 0.21 ERA. ... Uggla has a 10-game hitting streak. ... Oswalt (7-8, 3.80) takes the mound for the Phillies in the series finale. Oswalt is 1-3 with a 5.56 ERA in 10 career games vs. Atlanta. Brandon Beachy (7-2, 3.37) pitches for the Braves. Beachy is 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts against Philadelphia.
