Team Work - Baseball or Paintball - It's All The Same

Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to have worked with a manager who believed that sports and competition teamwork would have a positive impact on employee's compatibility and productivity in the work place.

Baseball, being universally liked by most all employees at our store at this time along with my manager being a part time umpire for his son's school baseball team made the choice easy. Like work, this was going to take training and practice along with some determination. Even after the first few games, we probably all looked like the worst bunch of ball players he had ever tried to coach. On the other hand, we were encouraged to hold ball practice on weeks we did not have a game and soon got a lot better. Some aches and pains for a few days after, along with the occasional sprained foot or other body parts gave you bragging rights about how well our team did. Of course, a few aches and pains may have been related to the amount of beer that was consumed that evening. Eventually due to the extra effort and practice, our team became the team to beat. Along with this team mentality about sports came a rewarding and positive team ethic in the workplace. Anyone working on a project needing help or an extra hand could expect to receive that extra effort, just like our ball team worked together to win a game.

Now it would seem reasonable to assume that other sports teams, organized from the work place or with other friends would have a similar quality effect in your work place. The sport of paintball has many game options and player scenarios centered on an individual or team concept. This appears to be the reason the game of paintball, that can be played year round in most parts of the country, is becoming so very popular. Likewise as a game and a sport, something a work place team can compete in. Having more than one level of game play for beginner and advanced level players should include most anyone willing to have a great time and make a lasting sports memory. Having a paintball team from work can definitely develop a new found spirit and healthy competition among employees and inspire new relationships that will reflect in a much better work environment.

Make Safety First. All paintball games do have rules pertaining not only to playing a particular scenario game such as woodsball, but also to several rules created to keep this sport safe for all players. These paintballs can do three hundred feet per second and will leave a welt if a player does not wear proper clothing. No one on a properly officiated paintball field would be allowed on or engage in competition without head and face protection. These paintballs do carry quite a bit of energy and most fields generally do not allow any player to shoot another player from any closer than twenty feet. Additional rules are for the most part simple to understand and practice. Even in the heat of competition, a common sense of safety first should be a good guide to keep from having a bad experience and having many more great sports moments.

Just a few tips for paintball beginners

*Wear comfortable clothing along with pants and shirts that can allow a full range of motion. Clothing for woodsball play should be camouflaged. All clothing and harnesses need to be durable and quality made.

* Stay hydrated, before, during, and after your play. Paintball can be a physically demanding sport.

* If you are playing for recreation choose dark colored guns and clothing. Select guns that appear realistic in size and color. Different player positions sometimes require a need for a specific type of gun such as close quarters or sniper designation.

* It is going to happen, you will have paintballs break in your gun at some point. A simple gun barrel squeegee will clean this up and get you back in the game.

* A good quality paintball will save you time in clean up on the field due to breakage and also provide more consistent accuracy. Paintballs come in a large variety of shell and fill colors along with fill consistency. Teams using a different type and color can easily see who has been tagged or what has been hit.

In conclusion, from the work place any game or sporting event sponsored or not, can create a long term positive benefit as well as many fun and great memories.
