Manchester United could return to the UEFA Champions League thanks to a chain of events that was sparked by Essam Al-Hadari’s infamous transfer to Swiss side Sion in 2008.
FIFA said on Saturday that the Swiss FA has until January 13 to take action against Sion, who fielded ineligible new players in the Europa League despite being banned from making transfers for their illegal signing to Al-Hadari from Ahli.
If the Swiss FA failed to respond, league champions Basel will be eliminated from this season’s Champions League after qualifying for the last 16 at the expense of United.
FIFA stressed that: "Should this deadline not be respected, the Swiss FA will be automatically suspended from 14 January 2012 onwards."
