Real stroll with Valencia, Villarreal held

Real Madrid responded to their El Clasico defeat with a 2-0 win over Ponferradina in the first-leg of their last-32 tie in the Copa Del Rey tonight.

The defending champions had their 15-game winning run ended by rivals Barcelona on Saturday night, with star man Cristiano Ronaldo attracting criticism in the aftermath following one of his less effective performances.

The Portuguese international was back on song tonight, though, rounding things off with a goal after Jose Callejon's opener, while Raul Albiol was sent off for the winners.

Things were not quite as rosy against lower-league opposition for Valencia, though, who had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Cadiz, while only an 81st-minute goal from Borjan Valero earned Villarreal a 1-1 draw at Mirandes.

There was also a minor shock in Andalusia as Cordoba beat Real Betis 1-0, with Pepe Diaz netting in the last minute.

Another surprising result came at the Riazor, as Deportivo La Coruna issued a reminder of their capabilities to the top-flight clubs by beating Levante 3-1. Having been relegated last season, Jose Luis Oltra's men were keen to prove that they can still be a force and did just that, with Pablo Alvarez and a brace from Saul doing the damage. Carlos Arande scored for Levante, who had Hector Rodas sent off.

Juanmi's goal was enough to help Malaga to a 1-0 win in the all-La Liga tie at Getafe, while Juan Muniz secured the same result for Sporting Gijon at in-form Real Mallorca.

Javier Aguirre's struggling Real Zaragoza were unable to get the better of minnows Alcorcon as they played out a 1-1 draw in Madrid, while Osasuna ran out 3-1 winners over nine-man Almeria.

Celta Vigo and Espanyol drew 0-0, two goals from Xabi Prieto helped Real Sociedad to a 4-1 win over Granada, and a last-minute goal from Ariel Nahuelpan ensured Racing Santander turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Freddie Kanoute's early goal helped Sevilla win 1-0 at San Roque.
