Ifill on song as Brisbane slide continues

Paul Ifill set a new club record as Wellington Phoenix inflicted a third consecutive defeat on A-League leaders Brisbane Roar at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Ifill broke Shane Smeltz's record with his 22nd goal for Phoenix in the 27th minute and Nick Ward sealed a 2-0 victory with nine minutes to go. After seeing their 36-game unbeaten run come to an end, Roar have now lost three in a row but still top the table on goal difference.

After Ben Sigmund headed wide for the hosts, they took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Ifill deceived defender Matthew Jurman and fired into the top corner.

Tim Brown then saw a goal ruled out for offside early in the second period and a header tipped over the bar by Brisbane keeper Michael Theoklitis in the 57th minute before Wellington doubled their lead in the final ten minutes. Ifill played in Ward and the latter made no mistake in blasting home the second to make the points safe.
