Stevens plays down title chances

Schalke coach Huub Stevens has played down his side's title chances this season after last night's 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin took the Royal Blues level on points with league leaders Bayern Munich.

According to Stevens, seeing Schalke's name at the very top of the pile is nothing more than a "momentary situation" which will change over the course of the second half of the season.

"I don't think it is really all that important," he said. "We know that we are not going to be up there at the end of the season because we just don't have the stability for it."

Schalke's general manager Horst Heldt was equally pessimistic about his side's chances of glory this year.

He said: "Of course it is a good feeling to be up there, but we must not forget where we come from.

"We finished last season 14th. The team is heading in the right direction and they are enjoying themselves."

Goalscorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar disagrees, however, and feels Schalke have every right to be at the top. He has set his sights on UEFA Champions League football next season.

"Our aim is to finish inside the top four," he is quoted as saying by the Westdeutsche Allgemeine newspaper. "We want to stay up there, and that is where we are now."
