Whitecaps add defender White ahead of MLS roster freeze

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps added Trinidad & Tobago defender Carlyle Mitchell to the club's roster Thursday.

The move, pending an international transfer certificate, came just before Major League Soccer's roster freeze, which runs through the rest of the regular season and the MLS Cup playoffs.

"Carlyle is a young, athletic prospect that provides additional depth to the centre back position," said Tom Soehn, Whitecaps acting head coach and director of soccer operations said in a statement.

The 24-year-old Mitchell joins Vancouver after starting his professional career with Joe Public FC in Trinidad & Tobago.

Mitchell made his senior international debut in a 3-1 friendly defeat at home to Caribbean rivals Jamaica on Aug. 11, 2010.

Vancouver sits last in the MLS with a 4-13-10 record.
