QUEBEC - Top-ranked Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia advanced to the quarter-finals of the $220,000 WTA Bell Challenge tournament on Thursday with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 win over Hungary's Melinda Czink.
Hantuchova will play Marina Erakovic in the quarter-finals after the New Zealander advanced with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over seventh-seeded Irina Falconi of the U.S.
Meanwhile, No. 6 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic defeated Croatia's Mirjana Lucic 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
It was a bad day for Lucie Safarova. The No. 2 seed was upset 7-6 (1), 7-5 by fellow Czech Andrea Hlavackova in singles play, then lost her doubles match with Dutch partner Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 7-6 (3) to Britain's Heather Watson and Germany's Kathrin Woerle.
Vancouver's Rebecca Marino faces Krajicek in quarter-final action on Friday.
Marino and Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., lost 6-3, 6-3 to Slovakia's Petra Rampre and American Chichi Scholl in double's competition Thursday.
